Jen Brown has over 27 years of experience as an elementary educator and serves as an Educational Specialist for Elementary Social Studies in Fairfax County Public Schools. Jen has served as a teacher intern supervisor at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education and has been a consultant with the Virginia Department of Education, serving on various curriculum, assessment, and professional development committees. Jen is a dedicated, innovative educator who believes that by leveraging shared expertise through collaboration, professional learning, and research-based practices, she can make a difference in designing a social studies curriculum that empowers teachers and elevates student voices through inquiry and authentic, meaningful learning experiences. She is passionate about building teacher capacity through professional learning and believes all students can and should engage in the critical thinking skills needed to be informed, active, empathetic, and positive contributors to their local, state, national, and global communities. Jen lives in Alexandria and is an avid reader, coffee drinker, beach lover, and cat mom!

Bio
An award-winning educator, Denise has served as a Catholic school teacher and principal in the Archdiocese of Detroit and as a principal and an Associate Superintendent of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. In addition, Denise has served on numerous boards and committees, including the boards of the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools (MANS), the What Ike Would Do (WIWD) Foundation, and Bergen Catholic High School. A veteran of the United States Army and currently the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning for the Archdiocese of Washington, Denise holds a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, a master’s degree from the University of Detroit Mercy, and a doctoral degree from Liberty University. Dr. Cera Doering began her career over 18 years ago with Baltimore City Public Schools as a classroom teacher. Six years later, she served as a math specialist who supported a network of 14 schools to achieve their annual yearly progress goals. This led to serving as a school principal at PK-8 schools serving up to 1,200 students. She is currently the Director of Recruitment and Partnerships for Baltimore City Public Schools and the mother of five beautiful children who keep her grounded. Jéri Ogden

Bio
Dr. Jéri L. Ogden, Ed.D. is an educator, writer, and facilitator passionate about equitable practices and cultural competence. With over 14 years of progressive teacher leadership, she works at a nationally recognized education non-profit that provides teaching and learning experiences to a network of educators.

She started her career in education working at DC’s first all-boys public charter school as a substitute teacher and assistant director of the after-school program before training as a Summer 2010 DC Teaching Fellow. Dr. Ogden has taught at public and charter schools in DC and Houston and at an international school in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. During her time in the classroom, she served as a Smithsonian Science in Pre-K Educator and a Flamboyan Family Engagement Fellow, completing over 100 home visits and engaging with families from all 8 Wards in DC. She gained experience teaching Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 3rd-5th grade English Language Arts & Social Studies.
Dr. Ogden holds a Bachelor’s from Howard University in Communication and Culture, a Master’s from American University in Educational Leadership and Policy, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Organizational Innovation from Marymount. She is a member of the adjunct staff at Georgetown University and Marymount University, where her courses focus on restorative practices, relationship building in school systems, professional collaboration, and empathy. In addition, she is the founder of P.U R.P.L.E., a consulting firm that provides purposeful, uplifting, and restorative professional learning experiences to organizations and communities. Her work is rooted in the philosophy that you cannot separate the tree from its roots, and she always seeks to understand the context of people and places because it matters. In her spare time, Dr. Ogden enjoys traveling worldwide, spending time with her loved ones, including her dog Morrison, attending concerts, and adding to her plant collection.

Bio

Craig is the High School Social Studies Curriculum and Instruction Specialist for Fairfax County Public Schools in Fairfax, VA. He also is an online adjunct professor of education for Framingham State University and the teacher certification program, Educate VA. Previously, he taught at American Schools in Brazil for six years and six years in public schools in Massachusetts. After leaving the classroom, Craig was the Coordinator for Curriculum and Instruction for Social Studies and History at Virtual High School and then the PK-12 Social Studies Coordinator for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools. He has consulted for World Savvy, IIE, iEARN, ABC-Clio, Knovva Academy, the U.S. Department of State, and the OER Project. Bio

Dr. Beverly Joyner grew up in the D.C. area and began her career as a secondary English teacher in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Her career has spanned K-12 classroom teacher to Cluster Technology Coordinator, university instructional designer to Assistant Professor of Instructional Technology and Educational Leadership, and, more recently, instructional systems specialist to Acting Director of Training and Certification in government and military organizations.

Instructional systems design, human-centered design, instructional technology integration and technical pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK), communities of practice, and organizational learning.
