FAQs

1. I have a research project in mind but have never submitted a research proposal. Where do I begin?
Start by scheduling a one-on-one consultation with ORDES. We can help you identify relevant funding opportunities, outline your proposal timeline, connect you with collaborators, and guide you through key elements such as proposal structure, budget planning, and submission requirements.

If you know what funding opportunity you plan to pursue and are ready to begin the grant application process, please submit a completed Authorization to Pursue form to MU’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).

2. How can I acknowledge ORDES on a manuscript submission?
We appreciate acknowledgment when ORDES has provided support. A sample statement you may use in the Acknowledgments section of your manuscript is:

“The authors thank [name of staff member] at the Office of Research Development, Education, and Support (ORDES) at Marymount University for providing [editing/feedback/proofreading/formatting] assistance on this manuscript.”

3. How involved can ORDES be—are you like a research assistant I can use for analysis/data collection/writing help with my project?
No. ORDES provides strategic guidance, training, and feedback, but does not conduct the project work on behalf of a PI or research team (we’d love to, but don’t have the time!). Our role is to support your success and to provide guidance, but not to replace the responsibilities of project staff or investigators.

4. Can ORDES write my grant for me?
No. ORDES can provide detailed feedback, help edit drafts, and occasionally draft non-technical sections. For scientific grant writing support beyond this, please contact the Office of Sponsored Programs, specifically ">James Harnsberger, Scientific Grant Writer.

5. Does ORDES offer training sessions?
Yes. ORDES organizes training programs on research methods, proposal development, funding searches, and compliance in collaboration with Faculty Development, the IRB, OSP, and other offices. These sessions are open to faculty, staff, and students depending on the topic.

6. Can ORDES help me find funding opportunities?
Yes. ORDES offers grants prospecting assistance, including training on using the GrantForward database. Anyone with an MU email address can create a free GrantForward account to search for funding opportunities.

7. Does ORDES provide feedback on manuscripts?
Yes. We can review manuscripts for clarity, structure, and alignment with journal guidelines. We do not replace peer review but can help strengthen your submission before it’s sent to a journal.

8. Can ORDES connect me with potential collaborators?
Yes. We can help you identify and connect with faculty at MU and external partners whose expertise complements your project.

9. Who can use ORDES services?
ORDES services are available to Marymount University faculty, staff, and students engaged in research, scholarship, or creative activity.
