Service Learning

Service Learning in Central America

Our medical mission allows students and faculty to travel to hospitals, eldercare facilities, long-term care facilities, and rehabilitation clinics in Latin America where we provide physical therapy services to under-served populations. There, we are able to administer individualized screenings, evaluations, skilled treatments, and other services to patients who do not have adequate access to necessary medical care. We also emphasize caregiver and patient education as integral parts of this mission, ensuring that our vision provides a lasting impact on the communities we serve.

Go Baby Go

Go baby Go! transforms the lives of children with mobility challenges by providing adapted battery powered cars and4-wheelers to help these kids move in their environment … just like other kids do. Our Build and Grow events are multi-faceted events that bring together ALL members of the community: families, healthcare providers, policy makers, legislators, local businesses, civic organizations, volunteer groups, and corporate partners. During the event, participants share information, build sustainable plans, and build vehicles for children to “drive home” that day.

Go-Baby-Go is an unbelievably rewarding program as a student. For a few hours, you are able to participate in the challenge of building and customizing a car for a child who may never have experienced that level of independence before. These cars enable children at all levels to move about and play freely as well as explore the world around them in new ways. Mobility is something so many of us take for granted, so to be able to help these children become more mobile is an unforgettable and extremely humbling experience.”

Remote Area Medical

Remote Area Medical (RAM) is a major nonprofit provider of free pop-up clinics. Their mission is to prevent pain and alleviate suffering by providing free, quality healthcare to those in need. They deliver free dental, vision and medical services to underserved and uninsured individuals.

Attending Remote Area Medical (RAM) in Emporia VA this summer really put into perspective the lack of healthcare access that exists across the United States. We all had the ability to help provide free, quality health and physical therapy services to an underserved community who live in a rural location and suffer from inequities and gaps in care. We could all see firsthand how providing some compassion, community engagement, and social responsibility can make a real national and international impact. It was also an amazing opportunity to bond and get to know my fellow classmates and faculty outside of 4040. This is an opportunity everyone should take advantage of, even if rural health care is not on your radar!”
