Marymount University invites the public to a free opening reception for the exhibit “Ingredients,” with 10 photographs by Slobodan Mitrovic that explore details of David Carlson’s work and five original paintings by Carlson. The reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14 at the Barry Gallery.
The unique exhibition came about after Mitrovic asked to photograph Carlson’s work following one of his openings. An archeologist and the exhibit’s curator, Mitrovic said his photographs could be considered archeology of Carlson’s artistic process. Close-up images highlight brush strokes and show how the paintings evolved during the creative process. Mitrovic noted the paintings are stories to be read, translated and enjoyed.
An Arlington-based artist and Marymount adjunct professor, Carlson’s paintings and digital works are represented in numerous collections, both private and corporate, national and international. He has engaged in artist exchanges with Central Asia, West and North Africa and Europe, and has had more than 25 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows since 1986.
Mitrovic, a scholar in residence at Marymount, has worked as a newspaper and magazine photographer in the past. His extensive work as an archeologist includes experience in the Eastern United States, Israel, Serbia and Turkey.
The Barry Gallery, located in the Reinsch Library at Marymount, 2807 North Glebe Road, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Admission is free. Access for individuals with disabilities is available. The exhibit will run Sept. 7 to Oct. 14. (The Reinsch Library and Barry Gallery entrance is at 26th Street, just north of Yorktown Boulevard.)
