Examples at Marymount

  • The Nurse-Managed Health Center at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Arlington provides screenings (for blood pressure, diabetes, etc.), health education, and care referrals.
  • Working with Arlington County schools, Dr. Skye Donovan, assistant professor of Physical Therapy, is developing programs to combat childhood obesity.
  • Each year, Physical Therapy (DPT) students in their final year travel to Costa Rica to help the residents of two orphanages and the nearby poor communities.
  • Marymount’s Campus Ministry has “awareness months” addressing important current issues, including hunger and homelessness and peace and justice.

Academic Courses and Programs

Marymount offers a minor in Social Entrepreneurship. In addition, a variety of courses address well-being and social justice issues. They include a Nursing course in Health Promotion and Risk Reduction in Communities; a wide range health and human performance courses in fitness, nutrition, and wellness; Philosophy courses in ethics, such as Business Ethics and Ethics and Public Policy; and Sociology courses like Social Justice: Ethical Dilemmas in Social Context, The Global Village, and Addressing Injustice.
