Update: Marymount extends online-only class period through end of semester, exploring alternative commencement options

Update on March 19:
Marymount University will now be extending the online-only class period through the end of the spring semester, including final exams.

It was also decided that the traditional commencement ceremonies scheduled for May 2020 would be canceled in order to best protect the health and safety of the greater Marymount community. However, the University is reaching out to graduating seniors to receive their input on how they would like to celebrate this milestone and their achievements at Marymount, whether through a postponed commencement to be held at a later date or a virtual commencement ceremony. More details are forthcoming.

Update on March 16:
In order to continue ensuring the health and safety of the campus community, Marymount University will extend its online-only class period to Tuesday, April 14 (previously March 30), as the greater Washington region sees increased cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019).

As the situation connected to the spread of the virus evolves, there is the possibility that the online-only period will be extended again if necessary. Marymount’s Spring Break, which was extended by two days, will conclude with the beginning of online-only classes this Wednesday.

There have still been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Marymount community. The campus has undergone deep cleaning and disinfection during Spring Break, and continues to remain open and operational. Students have been encouraged to stay off campus if possible, but are able to stay in residence halls if they cannot return home.

Please see the University’s Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information and Resources webpage for full updates and information on Marymount’s response to this fluid and quickly changing situation.

Info below posted on March 11:
Marymount University has announced that it will move forward with a plan to extend Spring Break until next Wednesday, and temporarily shift course programming to online delivery until later this month. This decision was made in order to best protect the health of students, faculty and staff, while still maintaining general operations and enabling students to continue learning.

With the increase of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) cases nationally and around the world, a standing committee of staff members representing Student Health Services, Campus Safety and other departments was established to coordinate the University’s response. It has been meeting every day to discuss how to take proactive measures in the best interest of the Marymount community.

The implemented plan will extend Spring Break by two days, with classes resuming online-only on March 18 and continuing through March 29. The two-day extension gives faculty additional time to migrate their classes online, and participate in online training sessions beforehand.

At this time, on-campus classes are expected to resume on March 30. A decision will be made no later than March 24 on whether it is necessary to extend the online-only period beyond March 29.

Marymount is encouraging students to stay home if possible. However, residence halls and The Rixey apartments will be open for students who are unable to stay in accommodations off campus. Dining services will also be available on a limited basis.

The campus is undergoing deep cleaning and disinfection during Spring Break, and will continue to be open and fully operational for faculty and staff. Employees are encouraged to discuss telecommuting options with their supervisor as needed.

The University is following CDC recommendations and requiring that anyone who has traveled to a country determined to be a Level 2 or 3 risk follow self-quarantine measures for a period of two weeks.

While there have been confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the greater D.C. region, there have been no cases on any of Marymount’s campuses up to this point. As it is a fluid and evolving situation, the University’s Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information and Resources webpage will be updated on a regular basis with recommendations and communications sent to the wider MU community.
