MU student named 2020 Honors Scholar of the Year

Honors student MaryEllen Haas was selected by the Virginias Collegiate Honors Council (VCHC) as its 2020 Honors Scholar of the Year.

The award highlights a student from a member institution that successfully embodies the scholarship, character and ambition associated historically with honors students and the VCHC.

After submitting an essay sharing her personal narrative, along with a letter of recommendation, Haas was selected as the 2020 Honors Scholar of the Year from all Virginia and West Virginia honors programs.

Haas is a third-year Biochemistry major at Marymount, and feels deeply honored to be receiving the VCHC Scholar of the Year award.

“This honor so strongly reflects the immensely rewarding and uplifting experience of the Marymount Honors Program, and most of all, the encouragement and mentorship of incredibly dedicated and selfless Marymount faculty,” Haas said.

As an award recipient, Haas will receive registration at the VCHC Fall Honors Conference and a $500 cash award, and her narrative may be published in a future edition of the Proceedings of Virginias Collegiate Honors Council.

“I am tremendously blessed to belong to a community of peers that drives one another to strive for excellence in academics and character alike,” Haas added. “This community support and opportunities for research and personal development have greatly enriched my Marymount experience, for which I am forever grateful.”
