Marymount University’s annual student fashion show, Portfolio in Motion, will premiere Thursday, April 30 in the Rose Benté Lee Center on the school’s main campus, 2807 North Glebe Road. Premiere-night tickets are $100 ($70 for alumni) and can be purchased online at marymount.edu/pim/tickets. The price includes a 6:30 p.m. cocktail reception followed by the fashion show at 8 p.m.
This year’s show is themed “UNDERGROUND”, inspired by street art and graffiti, which, integrated with fashion, will ignite a unique interactive experience for the audience, according to the show’s Creative Director, Chelsea Connestro.
Eveningwear, sportswear, accessories, men’s and children’s wear will traverse the runway, as well as junior golf apparel, sporting original prints, the result of a grant from Cotton Incorporated. The show features the work of senior designers, whose diverse lines have Nigerian, Ethiopian, Caribbean and Saudi Arabian inspirations.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how the international influences affect our students’ take on contemporary design,” said Janice Ellinwood, chair of the fashion design and merchandising department. “It’s a wonderful reflection of the incredible diversity that we have at Marymount University.”
The event honors Sue Wong, Marymount’s 2015 Designer of the Year. Her signature style evokes the allure and glamour of various eras, such as Old Hollywood, Weimar Berlin, 1930s Shanghai and Manhattan’s gilded Jazz Age. Previous honorees have included the likes of Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors and the late Oscar de la Renta.
Portfolio in Motion is the culminating academic project for Marymount’s fashion design and merchandising students. Every aspect – from the jury-selected designs to all elements of the show’s production – reflects their academic and creative efforts. After seeing the show, Wong will review the senior fashion design students’ portfolios, share her expertise and give advice to guide them as they begin their careers.
