Marymount University is expanding access to advanced social work education with the launch of its online Master of Social Work (MSW) program. Designed for those passionate about making a difference, the new offering features a clinically focused curriculum that prepares graduates to provide compassionate care, address systemic challenges and lead as agents of change in diverse professional settings.
“Marymount’s online MSW program is uniquely positioned to prepare students for all of the challenges and opportunities in today’s dynamic and interconnected world,” said Dr. Henry Poduthase, Marymount University associate professor and program director. “Our curriculum is grounded in the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion, and our students benefit from a supportive community that reflects these values. Whether they address mental health, poverty or systemic inequities, our graduates are equipped to create meaningful change in the lives of those they serve.”
The program’s comprehensive curriculum integrates classroom instruction with clinical fieldwork, preparing students for licensure and impactful careers in diverse settings. Graduates will be ready for careers that include mental health therapy, substance abuse counseling, agency leadership and social work within families, schools and hospitals. They will also be prepared to work in child welfare, health care, advocacy, community organizing, corrections, policy research and the military.
Marymount’s online MSW program is designed to provide students with an exceptional learning experience through four key features:
Clinical Focus: Students gain a robust understanding of clinical social work practice, including assessment, diagnosis, intervention and evaluation. The program’s curriculum readies graduates to address diverse client needs in settings such as hospitals, schools, mental health agencies and private practice.
Expert Faculty: Students learn from experienced, licensed social workers and active scholars who bring real-world insights into the classroom. Faculty members teach and mentor students, connecting them to professional networks and helping them secure practicum placements and career opportunities.
Field Education: With 900 hours of supervised practicum work for foundational students and 500 hours for advanced-standing students, graduates apply their knowledge in professional settings under the guidance of seasoned practitioners. This hands-on experience is integral to preparing for clinical licensure and building professional confidence.
Interdisciplinary Approach: The program emphasizes collaboration across disciplines, encouraging students to engage with professionals in health care, education and policy to holistically address complex social issues.
Developed in partnership with an online education design leader, the program incorporates cutting-edge instructional technology and innovative teaching methods to create a dynamic and flexible learning environment. The fully online format ensures accessibility for students while Marymount’s proximity to Washington, D.C., provides unique opportunities to engage with policy and advocacy at both the local and global levels.
“Our graduates will leave this program ready to lead with compassion and expertise,” explained Dr. Pamela Slaven-Lee, Interim Provost at Marymount University. “By blending rigorous academic preparation with hands-on fieldwork and faculty mentorship, Marymount’s MSW program equips students to meet the growing demand for clinical social workers who also advocate for social justice and equity.”
As Virginia’s most diverse private university and a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, Marymount is committed to fostering inclusivity and empowering underrepresented communities. The MSW program reflects this commitment by actively recruiting students from diverse backgrounds, including minorities, veterans and DACA students, and equipping them with the tools to address societal challenges.
“The online MSW program fosters socially conscious leaders and lifelong learners who embody the intrinsic values of dignity, respect and equity,” Dr. Poduthase added. “By focusing on global and local challenges, students are prepared to contribute to societal transformation through impactful policies, evidence-based interventions and meaningful advocacy for marginalized communities.”
