Marymount Honors Sister Brigid Driscoll with Plaza

Marymount University honored the service of longtime Board of Trustees member Sister Brigid Driscoll, RSHM, Ph.D., during the Dec. 6 dedication of the Driscoll Plaza on the school’s main campus. Driscoll served as the president of Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, from 1979 to 1999, and prior to that was a member of its mathematics faculty.

The plaza was named through a generous donation from fellow Trustee Michael Hegarty, who lives in the New York City area and has been a longtime supporter of the RSHM.

“Sister Brigid has a long, distinguished history in higher education and has spent her life with the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary,” said Marymount President Matthew D. Shank. “This recognition is well-deserved and doesn’t begin to do justice to the impact she’s had on Marymount.”

The plaque in her honor reads, in part: “Sr. Brigid’s leadership of our sister institution touched the lives of countless students, while advancing the mission of our Founders, the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary.”

Shank said Driscoll is an ideal board member, she understands the mission of the RSHM and because of her background in higher education as a professor and college president.

“She’s very passionate about wanting Marymount to move forward and succeed and is always present, always participating, and is always engaged,” he said. “I’m personally happy for her and happy that we’re naming something that will live on in perpetuity for others to enjoy.”

Formerly known as the Rowley Patio area, Driscoll Plaza is located in front of Rowley Hall, which houses Marymount’s School of Education & Human Services and many of its student services, including the Registrar, Academic Affairs, and Centers for Global Education, Teaching & Learning, and Career Development.

Among those attending the dedication ceremony were Sister Driscoll, Sister Catherine Mary Patten, RSHM, Provincial Superior, Eastern American Province, Sister Kathleen Connell, RSHM, Sister Jackie Murphy, RSHM, Sister Jacquelyn Porter, RSHM, Sister Maria Timoney, RSHM, Sister Patricia Earl, IHM, and Father Tom Yehl. Marymount officials included Dr. Shank, retired CFO Ralph Kidder, former Provost Dr. Sherri Lind Hughes, and Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Edward Bersoff and Trustees Stefan Fedor, Robert Fitch, Yong Kim and Carmelita Treacy ’60.

Marymount University is an independent, coeducational Catholic university offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in a wide range of disciplines.
