Marymount celebrates 30 years of beloved mascot at inaugural birthday bash

Last week, the Marymount community gathered to wish Bernie, the University’s beloved mascot, an early 30th birthday.

Bernie the St. Bernard was adopted as Marymount’s lovable mascot on April 15, 1995, to help build school spirit at athletic events and other functions. The original artwork for Bernie was created by Graphic Design alumnus Anthony Valinote ‘93.

This marks the first year that Marymount’s Office of Student Engagement has hosted Bernie’s Birthday Bash, an event that staff hope will become a highly anticipated annual tradition. They described the inaugural birthday celebration as a “roaring success,” with the University welcoming students, faculty, staff and alumni to enjoy the festivities.

Bernie enjoyed a VIP entrance and was serenaded by preschool students from Marymount’s Early Learning Academy, who gave him plenty of hugs and high-fives following their performance. The mascot then joined Marymount students at a photo booth, posing and snapping birthday photos to commemorate the occasion.

Bernie was also visited by fellow furry friends in the form of Doggie De-stress therapy dogs, who are invited by the Office of Wellness to bring smiles to the campus community. Among the attendees was Raven, a 10-year-old Shetland Sheepdog, and her owner Nancy Murray, who have been participating in Doggie De-stress events for almost eight years.

“Raven has been coming here for years and this is her very favorite event we’ve ever been to,” Murray said of the birthday celebration. “We love coming to Marymount—it’s such a wonderful community and Raven really enjoys providing some joy to the college students.”

Finally, Bernie joined fellow Saints in stuffing plush dogs for attendees to take home, then helped hand out parting goodie bags to his friends.

“It was great to see so many students and Marymount community members join us to celebrate Bernie’s milestone birthday,” said Stephen Esposito, Marymount’s Director of Student Engagement. “We appreciate all the help from all of the offices that came together to make this event successful, including the Office of Wellness and the Early Learning Academy. We’re excited to make next year’s celebration even better.”

The Class of 2025 will honor Bernie in a special way this year through the Senior Class Gift. Those who donate will receive a philanthropy cord to wear for graduation in honor of Bernie’s legacy and Marymount’s 75th anniversary.
