Change of Education Level I-20

What is a Change of Education Level I-20?

Many F-1 students decide to pursue another degree program at Marymount.  If you are completing your current degree, or finishing your authorized Optional Practical Training (OPT), and are admitted to a new degree program at Marymount University, you are required to submit documents to process a new I-20.  This I-20 is referred to as a Change of Education Level I-20.

How to Request a Change of Education Level I-20

Your request for a Change of Education Level I-20 must be completed, and the Change of Education Level I-20 issued, before the end of the 60-day grace period after your previous program completion or OPT expiration date.

Step 1: Receive admission to Marymount University for a new program. NOTE: the new program start date must occur within 5 months of completing your current program end date.

Step 2: Log in to the ISSS Portal and proceed to Tab 4.

  1. Click the icon named I-20 for New Degree Level Request.
  2. Answer the Questionnaire, then click Next.
  3. Upload all the required documents:

Next Steps

After you click Submit, ISSS will receive an automatic notification of your request. An ISSS Advisor will then review your documents. If we have questions or need more information, we will contact you through your Marymount student email account.

  • You must respond to any Clarification Requested notifications from ISSS before the Advisor will be able to continue to process your request.
  • Be sure to click Submit again after you upload new or updated documents. We will not receive notification of your updated request unless you click Submit again.
  • You should retain the same SEVIS ID number and you should not need to pay the SEVIS Fee again.

Once the required documents are approved, ISSS will issue you a Change of Education Level I-20 for your new degree program. At that time, you will receive an email from ISSS with instructions about next steps.

  • Once issued,  you will be able to use your Change of Education Level I-20 to apply to renew your F-1 visa.
  • At the start of your first semester in your new degree program, you must complete ISSS Check-In again in order to activate your new degree level I-20 and be SEVIS registered. You will not be in Active, Continuing status on your new I-20 until SEVIS registration is completed.
  • Once you are activated for your new degree program level, Marymount will no longer have access to your previous level SEVIS record.
