The MCOA team also presented a poster on their ongoing work assessing the feasibility of fall prevention programs implementation based on an academic-community partnership at the conference. Since 2016, the MCOA team has been involved in a federally-funded project to implement fall prevention programs in the Northern Virginia region. This project has trained approximately 5,000 older adults and is currently in the stage of assessing the program’s reach, and outcomes and planning its next phase of implementation.
The Challenges of the Stigma of Alzheimer’s Disease and How It Delays Early Detection and Diagnosis
In this colloquium, Dr. Donna de Levante Raphael, a Gerontologist and the Director of the National Memory Screening Program at the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America presented her current research on the stigma of Alzheimer’s disease and how it creates barriers to early detection and diagnosis. Her work addresses how primary care physicians and other health care providers can begin to remove these barriers. Dr. Levante Raphael discussed the need for efforts to bring about social change to facilitate positive health outcomes and improve the quality of life for older adults experiencing cognitive impairment.
This training is only for current MOB coaches who want to become certified to deliver MOB virtually, too. The V-MOB virtual training will be held on Friday, August 19, 2022.
The Fairfax Area Agency held a Free Panel Conversation for Family Caregivers of Older Adults and/or Adults with Disabilities.

According to the National Safety Council, research has shown since 2020, 113,500 people died from preventable injury-related home deaths. This number continues to increase every year. In this panel conversation, the speakers explored home safety educational tips and resources to help prevent injury and accidental deaths in the home.
We were happy to collaborate with the Arlington Neighborhood village on the National Senior Health & Fitness Day Arlington Style on May 25th, 2022. At the event, we met with different senior citizens of the Arlington Neighborhood, did vital sign checks, gave memory screening, grip strength, and so much more! We took this wonderful opportunity to provide Health Education to our elderly population about different health conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, and fall risk.
National and regional experts and thought leaders explain how to effectively implement and sustain health promotion programs for older adults in the community. The workshop is inlaid with various topics that promote health.
