How did you find out about this internship opportunity?
Marymount has a longstanding relationship with Serco, so they are always looking to hire Marymount students as interns. I connected with them and now, after eight months, they’ve hired me full time! I’m grateful that Marymount had that relationship with Serco as it allowed me to get my foot in the door and work for a company that I love.
How did Marymount prepare you for this internship?
I think my time in Marymount’s Student Government Association prepared me well because I had gotten used to working with both my peers and those in higher positions of authority. Knowing how to communicate and build relationships with people from all different backgrounds and walks of life was instrumental in helping me turn this into a full-time position. My bosses were impressed that I was confident and capable, able to speak up and collaborate with everyone. I owe that to the relationship-building and leadership skills I learned from Marymount.
What was the highlight of your internship?
Growth was the highlight — at first, walking into a room with executives and presenting a project was very daunting. But it got easier as I became more confident in my ability to do the work they gave me. I was proud of how I grew and adapted to fit the needs of my environment.
What’s your advice for other students looking for internship opportunities?
Network and take advantage of the opportunities on campus that will help you stand out from the crowd. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and take initiative. People sometimes think asking questions makes you look like you don’t know anything, but it shows you’re eager to learn. And don’t just sit around and wait for them to give you work — take initiative! Prove to them that you want to be there and that will help you stand out from the crowd.
