What brought you to Marymount and what has your overall experience been like here?
I was a transfer student and drawn to Marymount’s Fashion Merchandising and Marketing program and the Honors Program. Going to Marymount was really an amazing experience, from working with professors to meeting some of my best friends. Marymount provided a lot of opportunities for me to network and meet new people. My professors connected me with a lot of people in my industry and that’s how I got several of my internship opportunities, so I’m very grateful for that.
What were your duties and responsibilities as an intern at Wolf Trap?
I was an intern in the marketing team, so my job mainly focused on advertising for the upcoming summer season. We advertised shows and artists and I was in charge of putting event calendars together. I also worked with marketing representatives of the different artists and shows that were coming to Wolf Trap to make sure blurbs and photos on our website were up to their standards. Finally, I helped compile lists of artists similar to the ones who were performing during the summer season. Those lists will be used for outreach to smaller artists over the next few months in order to build a slate for the next performance season.
What are some of the things you learned from this internship experience?
This was my first in-person internship experience after COVID so I learned a lot about being in an office environment, how to communicate with supervisors and how to conduct yourself in a professional setting. I also learned important project management skills, such as how to track my work and establish checkpoints for review to ensure my work is contributing to goals my team is trying to achieve. All of these skills are invaluable for the workplace, so this internship was really beneficial to me.
What is your advice for students who want to stand out as interns?
Focus on establishing a great rapport and professional relationship with your supervisor and team members. I’d even suggest meeting with them outside of work to get some sort of mentorship advice. Get coffee or lunch with your coworkers and find out what insights they have to offer about the job site and your industry in general. Putting in that extra effort to build those relationships really makes you stand out and makes them remember you.
