Third Annual Marymount 5K a Success

The Third Annual Marymount 5K combined service and fun, with more than 230 runners doing post-race volunteer service work and enjoying themselves in a post-race celebration. It was held Saturday, April 22 on the school’s main campus and was co-hosted by MU’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, Marymount’s Wellness Committee, and the Student Government Association.

“This race is special because of its purpose – 100 percent of the entry fee is dedicated to funding the mission trip the Department of Physical Therapy takes to provide rehabilitation services to those in need and the Foundation for PT, which supports innovative physical therapy research,” said Department Chair Dr. Skye Donovan.

The race was held in conjunction with the university’s annual Remembrance Day, which includes reflections on members of the Marymount community who have passed away. The Marymount community had the opportunity to participate in projects that ranged from planting vegetables in a community garden for AFAC (Arlington Food Assistance Center) to packing bag lunches for A-SPAN (Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network) and Go Baby Go, a project the Physical Therapy Department is active in that modifies off-the-shelf-toy cars to help children with mobility issues.

Runners received a technical T-shirt, a pint glass and were treated to craft beer, food, and entertainment from a live band at “Saint City,” a family-friendly post-race party.

“We try to provide a unique, challenging course but also host a lively post-race party to celebrate everything great about Marymount,” Donovan added. “We also had a live band this year, Film at Eleven. They were outstanding, even in the rain!”

The top three men’s finishers were Desta Beriso Morkama, 31, of Arlington, with a time of 18:38; Edward Moran, 35, Falls Church, 20:29; and Joseph Norton, 31, Washington, D.C., 21:25.

Top women finishers included Kara Cartwright, 26, Falls Church, 24:27; Megan Moran, 34, Falls Church, 26:27; and Tricia Goldberg, 22, Springfield, 26:51.
