Marymount University announced a partnership with streaming giant Netflix and ed-tech company 2U, Inc. to offer free online boot camps in data science and engineering for its undergraduates.
Beginning in August, “Netflix Pathways Boot Camps” will offer three for-credit boot camps in data science, Java Engineering, and UX/UI at the Virginia university.
Designed by seasoned tech experts at Netflix, the curriculum seeks to expand students’ technical skills and “teach them how to apply what they’ve learned in their coursework to real-world business solutions.”
Throughout the training period, students will work with engineering, data, and UX/UI teams at Netflix to gain industry insights. Additionally, there are 1:1 mentorship sessions and tutoring from 2U’s seasoned advisors.
President of Marymount University Dr. Irma Becerra believes the boot camps will prepare students for purposeful careers. “This far-reaching partnership,” she said, “will allow Marymount University to provide essential credentials to our students that give them a competitive advantage in the global marketplace.”
Building a Diverse Pipeline
With Marymount joining the cohort, Netflix Pathways Boot Camps have now brought five institutions into the fold. The other colleges include Norfolk State University, Talladega College, Edward Waters College, and St. Edward’s University.
All five institutions are either HBCUs or Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSI) that offer high-quality learning opportunities for socially and economically disadvantaged students.
Senior software engineer at Netflix, Carlos Solares sees the program as an incredible opportunity now that Netflix is expanding the boot camps to HSIs. Solares is super excited as a Latino and believes these courses will “provide greater access and opportunity into this industry.”
Marymount classes in the Netflix Pathways Boot Camps will begin on August 24. University faculty will lead the online courses on a 16-week, part-time basis. All other details related to the courses are available here.
