President Shank named to NCAA Division III Presidents Council

Marymount University President Matthew D. Shank has been selected for the NCAA Division III Presidents Council, the highest governing body in Division III. Dr. Shank will represent the Capital Athletic Conference as one of 18 Division III presidents on the council.

“This is an honor and a privilege,” Shank said. “Intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of campus life here at Marymount and I welcome the opportunity to represent our conference at the national level.”

Shank has a strong background in sports. He pitched for the varsity baseball team at the University of Wyoming and is the author of the book, Sports Marketing: A Strategic Perspective.

Marymount has 17 intercollegiate teams, nine for men and eight for women. Under Shank’s leadership, the university added men’s baseball and volleyball, women’s golf, and men’s and women’s triathlon. It was the first college in the United States to field a varsity triathlon program.

Shank is the first representative from the CAC since St. Mary’s president Dr. Jane Margaret O’Brien served on the council in the early 2000s. Shank previously served on the Presidential Advisory Group, which provides consultation and advice to the Presidents Council.
