Marymount University invites the public to a free opening reception for an exhibit of the pastel drawings of Ellen Cornett from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Barry Gallery on the school’s main campus.
For the past decade, Cornett, a Maryland artist and art instructor, has concentrated on pastel and charcoal drawing, producing a body of work based loosely on her interpretations of fairytales and stories.
“Working in charcoal, carbon pencil and pastel, I create surreal tableaux frequently referencing fairy tales, poems and rhymes,” she writes of her work. “While the subject matter of each image varies widely, a number of common motifs, such as human figures with animal heads and animals in carts or on wheels, tie them together and make them seem like moments in one long, overarching plot. I strive to make something intriguing and meaningful from well-recognized sources, manipulating characters into odd vignettes of conflict, misunderstanding, and relationships gone awry.”
The exhibition will run through Oct. 8.
The Barry Gallery, located in the Reinsch Library at Marymount, 2807 North Glebe Road, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Admission is free. Access for individuals with disabilities is available.
