Arlington, Virginia – Marymount University invites the public to a free opening reception for an exhibit of drawings and paintings by four regional artists entitled “Figuring.” The reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27 at the Barry Gallery on the school’s main campus, 2807 North Glebe Road.
Featuring Sarah Bentley, Alexa de los Reyes, Colleen Garibaldi and Whitney Waller, the exhibit will run from Jan. 20 through Feb. 19. In this series of drawings and paintings, each artist investigates and presents the human form in various ways, allowing for reflection, pause and inquiry.
Bentley graduated cum laude with a BFA in illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2009, then attended the Angel Academy of Art in Florence from 2011-14. Her academic style of painting the figure gives a classical twist to modern society. Her work is often done with the model posing while she paints.
De los Reyes, who has worked as a writer and editor since graduating from Harvard College, began painting seriously in the late 1990s. With paintings of figures distorted by water reflections, she creates a visceral and mysterious space tied to the natural environment that is derived from seemingly ordinary events.
Garibaldi studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Studio Arts, Corcoran College of Art Continuing Education, Cloud Farm and Virginia Tech. She views the body as defining and shaping life, a conduit for understanding. Her figurative paintings challenge snap decisions based on outward appearances.
Waller, who received her BFA from the Corcoran College of Art and Design at The George Washington University in 2015, captures moments in time and in space with in situ pen and ink drawings on the D.C. Metro.
The Barry Gallery, located in the Reinsch Library at Marymount, 2807 North Glebe Road, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Admission is free. Access for individuals with disabilities is available.
