Marymount University invites the public to an opening reception for the exhibition “Personal Worlds,” which features oil paintings, drawings and prints by faculty member Mary Proenza. The opening is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barry Gallery on Friday, March 2. The exhibition will run through April 2.
“My work explores social, political, environmental, and personal themes, and starts from a sense that the world is inexhaustibly interesting,” Proenza noted in her artist statement. “I combine perception and other visual sources with memory, imagination, and narrative, and I work back and forth between drawing, painting, printmaking, and writing.”
Several of the works are part of a graphic memoir in progress, a chapter of which has been published in “Rosebud” magazine.
A California native, Proenza earned a Bachelor of Arts in literature at UC Santa Barbara’s College of Creative Studies, a Master of Fine Arts in painting at New York Studio School and her Master of Fine Arts in creative writing at The New School.
Her written art reviews have been published in “Art in America” and “The Brooklyn Rail,” and her visual art appears on the covers of books from John Daniel & Co. and CDs from CMH and Arhoolie.
She joined the Marymount faculty in August 2017 as an assistant professor of fine arts.
The Barry Gallery, located in the Reinsch Library at Marymount, 2807 North Glebe Road, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Admission is free. Access for individuals with disabilities is available.
