Marymount University’s Ballston Center Earns More Design Recognition

Marymount University’s Ballston Center continues to receive accolades. The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Interior Design Association recently gave the architecture firm Gensler the Award of Honor for its work on the complex in the 60,000-100,000 square foot category. The organization, which serves the Washington Metropolitan Area, Northern Virginia, Baltimore and Annapolis, held its Premiere Design Awards ceremony April 25 at The Harman Center for the Arts, Washington, D.C.

It’s the fourth honor Ballston Center has received for design excellence since opening in August. On April 17, the Urban Land Institute Washington made a special presentation of its 2018 Juror’s Choice Award to Marymount in recognition of its team’s dedication to creative placemaking — employing art and culture, in tandem with great design — to deliver a refreshing, affordable, creative new face to a project in the greater Washington area.

Ballston Center also earned a Design Arlington Award for Excellence in December. In November, the NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, recognized the complex with an Award of Excellence given by its Northern Virginia chapter.

“These honors reinforce the fact that, as we anticipated, Ballston Center is judged to be world-class,” said Marymount President Matthew D. Shank. “The fact that it’s getting such validation for the external design and look and feel of the building is just fantastic.”

The $75 million multi-use complex opened in August at 1000 North Glebe Road. LEED Gold Certified, it is comprised of a nine-story academic/office building and The Rixey, a 12-story residential/retail building, each boasting multi-level underground parking. The complex is anchored by a public plaza and the Reinsch Pierce Family Courtyard.

The Shooshan Company led a group that included architects Gensler and SK&I; Clark Construction, HITT Contracting, landscape architects Studio 39, and Avison-Young, leasing agent for the top three floors of office space at Ballston Center’s academic facility.
