For the eighth consecutive year Marymount University has been named a Military Friendly School by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs Magazine. The 2018 list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools serving students who are members of the U.S. military, veterans and their families.
“We take an individual approach to each student and let them know we’ll take care of them and that they’re part of a larger family,” said Mary Galvan, the school’s coordinator for Military and Veteran Student Services.
Galvan, an alumna who grew up in a military family, added that the school’s 13-to-1 student-faculty ratio, close-knit campus and strong academic reputation make Marymount a popular choice for the military. She said her office has an open door policy and that military students can reach out to her at any time about any issue and that she’ll do her best to get back to them within 24 hours.
Being chosen as a Top School in Military Advanced Education’s “2018 MAE Guide to Colleges & Universities” honors institutions with the best practices in military- and veteran-supportive education. Marymount’s selection is based on its military culture, financial aid for veterans and their families, on-campus support, online support services, flexibility in transferring college credits, and flexibility in dealing with redeployments.
“We provide GI Bill benefits for anyone who is eligible,” Galvan said. “We want military students to know they can attend Marymount University and be taken care of financially as well as personally.”
Marymount currently has 272 active duty military service members, veterans, and dependents enrolled in graduate and undergraduate programs. Of those, 158 veteran and dependent students are currently using GI Bill benefits.
“It is an honor to be recognized for our work with the military and veteran community,” said Dr. Vernon Williams, assistant dean of student engagement, transition, and leadership, who oversees the Office of Military and Veteran Student Services. “I am proud about where we are today and excited for where we are going.”
The university accepts the American Council of Education (ACE) college credit recommendations for military training. Marymount also has agreements with local colleges to smoothly accept courses and transfer credits.
