Marymount 5K Raises $11,000 to Buy Equipment for Service Trip

The inaugural Marymount 5K race was held April 18, with 387 runners raising $11,000 for physical therapy equipment that will be donated to the underprivileged during the university’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program’s annual service and learning trip to Costa Rica next spring.

“That’s $11,000 that’s going to immediately change lives in Costa Rica,” said Dr. Skye Donovan, an associate professor of physical therapy.

Donovan said patient lifts, wheelchairs and walkers will be among the items taken to orphanages and homes for severely disabled people next spring.

Mike Hamberger, 35, of Washington, D.C., was the marathon’s top male finisher with a time of 19:25. Meghan Krasenics, 25, of Arlington was the top female in 21:28. Eric Kirouac, 19, Arlington, was second overall and the fastest male Marymount student/alumni finisher with a time of 20:56. Casey McInerny, 28, Arlington, was the second fastest female and the top Marymount female finisher in 22:50.

The field included Dr. Jason Craig, who raised $1,500 and ran in a blue M&M costume. Craig, a professor of physical therapy, has made the Costa Rica trip five times. Other runners included Marymount President Matthew D. Shank, Provost Sherri Lind Hughes and men’s basketball coach Chris Rogers.

Seventy-five volunteers lined the course, half of them Marymount student-athletes who were in season and couldn’t run themselves. The race kicked off Remembrance Day on campus, and more than 100 volunteers – many of them race participants – helped prepare food packages for Helping Hands, a charity associated with Stop Hunger Now and Catholic Relief Services.

“It was one of the biggest events we ever hosted and just a great day overall,” said Donovan, who noted that the race started at 9 a.m. and people were still milling about at the after-party on campus at 2 p.m. “So mark your calendar for the April 2016 race!”
