Gazette Leader: Marymount president receives Kiwanis Club’s community service award

Marymount University president Irma Becerra on Oct. 11 was presented with the Kiwanis Club of Arlington’s 2023 Community Service Award.

Becerra, now entering her sixth year as the university’s president, was saluted for “all the amazing accomplishments you have had,” said Kiwanis Club president Linda Chandler.

“You can tell this is a joyful place,” Chandler said of the university’s main campus, where the presentation took place.

Becerra said she was pleased to receive the honor because “there are many core values that [we at Marymount share] with Kiwanis.”

“We’re very committed to our community,” she said.

Since the pandemic began to ebb, Marymount has hosted the service club’s twice-monthly luncheons. Chandler, who at the meeting was sworn in for a second non-consecutive one-year term as president, said she hoped the club and university would forge even deeper bonds.

“We’re doers, and we want to keep doing this year,” she said, expressing the hope for “expanding our relationship with Marymount in a very meaningful way.”

The Kiwanis Club of Arlington was chartered in 1931. For information, see their website at https://arlingtonkiwanis.com.
