Marymount University has appointed Carl Whitman as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO). He will officially begin his duties on Friday, May 1.
Whitman has extensive higher education experience in public and private, four-year and two-year institutions, most recently at Montgomery College in Maryland and previously at California State University, Stanislaus. Additionally, he was a founding employee of the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC), an innovative non-profit regional library cooperative supporting the information and research needs of nine universities in the Washington metropolitan area, including Marymount.
I am excited to become a part of Marymounts talented leadership team, especially at this challenging time when we all need to work together to use technology in innovative ways to ensure we can continue Marymounts commitment to being a student-centered learning community while maintaining momentum on achieving the vision and goals of our Strategic Plan, Whitman said.
Outside of higher education, he has provided technology consulting and advisory services for KPMG, IBM, Xerox Corporation and the Smithsonian Institution.
After transitioning to a temporary online learning environment and encouraging telecommuting for many of our employees, there has never been a time where technology has been so important for the success of our operations, said Dr. Irma Becerra, President of Marymount University. We needed a proven leader in information technology and someone with a wealth of experience working in higher education, and we found both in Carl. In addition, his expertise will be instrumental in the continued implementation of our Workday enterprise resource planning system.
Im also very grateful for the excellent work demonstrated by our search committee, which overcame the challenges of conducting the entire process remotely.
Whitman holds a Master of International Service degree from the School of International Service at American University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from American as well.
