Barry Gallery Reception Part of Marymount University’s Family Weekend

The public is invited to a free opening reception for the exhibition “Ceramic Art by Joe Hicks” from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Barry Gallery on the campus of Marymount University. It will feature the work of the professor who designed and leads the ceramic program in MU’s Department of Fine Arts.

“We expect to see a lot of students at the reception because ceramics has been a very popular class that’s available to everyone, not just art majors,” said Judy Bass, a professor of fine arts and director of the gallery.

Bass said the event is part of Family Weekend at Marymount.

“It’s always a wonderful weekend and the gallery reception is a great way to kick it off,” Bass said.

Hicks, who directed the ceramics program at Gallaudet University from 2008 through 2013, was also an adjunct professor of ceramics at The George Washington University from 2006 to 2013. He received his MFA in ceramics from George Washington and his bachelor’s degree in art from Shippensburg University. Now an assistant professor at Marymount, Hicks maintains a studio in his residence in Mount Rainier, Maryland, where he focuses on shino glazed pottery and ceramic vessels.

The Barry Gallery, located in the Reinsch Library at Marymount, 2807 North Glebe Road, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is free.

The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 3. For more information about the gallery, go to marymount.edu/barrygallery
