Annual U.S. News Rankings Tout Marymount’s Global Appeal

Marymount University is a leader in preparing students for success in a global economy and an increasingly diverse nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 Best Colleges Guide. Marymount ranks #1 among Regional Universities in the South for international students and #2 in campus ethnic diversity.

“We’re honored by the recognition and pleased that students from all over the world value the unique opportunities Marymount University offers,” said Marymount president Dr. Irma Becerra. “Washington, D.C. is our classroom thanks to the professional alliances that our faculty-mentors have forged with renowned institutions across the capital region. The caliber of opportunities for career-building internships that our undergraduate and graduate students enjoy quite frankly set this remarkable private university apart.””

Students from 76 countries around the globe choose Marymount, drawn by the school’s ideal location in a welcoming suburban neighborhood but only six miles from the nation’s capital, its embrace of the multicultural richness of the learning community, and its small class sizes. Marymount’s student to faculty ratio is 12:1.

In addition, Marymount is committed to creating a smooth cultural transition. Global Thinkers is one of several living-learning communities offered in Marymount’s six residence halls. Global Thinkers fosters mutual respect and understanding among students of different backgrounds. In effect an incubator for acculturation, the community helps new students, from both the U.S. and abroad, to adjust to college life while developing intercultural competence and social responsibility through global service projects and promotion of social justice across borders. Marymount’s popular Center for Global Education provides a wide variety of opportunities to study, research, volunteer and intern abroad. Over spring break, its Global Classroom Series offers opportunities that range from learning about macroeconomics in Prague, Czech Republic, to studying the politics of Western Europe in Strasbourg, France.

The University’s #2 ranking in campus ethnic diversity confirms its broad appeal on the home front as well. For this category, U.S. News editors focus on domestic diversity, removing international students from the equation. Forty-three percent of Marymount’s student body is comprised of minorities, which further solidifies the University’s role in preparing educators, medical professionals, businesspeople, community planners, government leaders and other graduates to serve people from divergent backgrounds and locales.

Beyond citing it as a global educational leader, U.S. News touts Marymount among the best regional universities in the South and also notes it as a superb choice for military veterans and as a “Best Value” school, providing excellent positive return on students’ educational investment.

Robust financial aid offerings and career planning opportunities are a Marymount hallmark. The University provided almost $16 million in financial aid in 2016 alone. Ninety-four percent of full-time, degree seeking first-college students receive some form of financial aid, ensuring the lifelong benefits of an outstanding private college education remain affordable to families.

In addition to this latest recognition by U.S. News, Marymount has been celebrated for its commitment to military veterans and their families. The University has been designated a Military Friendly School for eight consecutive years by G.I. Jobs Magazine and a Top School by Military Advanced Education’s “2018 MAE Guide to Colleges and Universities.” Marymount accepts the American Council of Education college credit recommendations for military training and participates in the Yellow Ribbon program for military veterans. More than 250 active duty military service members, veterans, and their dependents are enrolled in University programs, according to the latest data.
