Gifting Materials to the Library

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Marymount University Library! Your contributions help us to maintain collections that support the academic programs at MU.

If you would like to make a monetary donation to the library, go to Marymount University’s Areas to Support page and select “University Library” on the “Giving to a school, department or program” online giving page.

Donation Policy

The processing and cataloging of gift books requires space, funding, and staff. Like many other libraries, we are decreasing our collection of print materials and focusing more on electronic books, journals, and databases. We have a rich and full collection, and only need select items that support the research and pedagogy of the University.

The library retains or disposes of donations according to its needs and policies. We may discard duplicates, outdated or superseded materials, items in poor condition, or works not relevant or appropriate to its interests.  We may offer the donated items for resale which generates a small amount of money for the library.

MU employees cannot appraise the value of your donation, but we are happy to provide a receipt of the gift from the University Advancement Office.

What we accept

We accept materials that fit our collection development criteria.  Prospective donors should email Heather DeSomer at libacq@marymount.edu and attach a complete list of the materials that they wish to donate, including titles, authors, publication date, and ISBN. Our subject specialists will then review this list for items that are needed by the library. If you are unable to generate a list of titles, please contact one of the alternative organizations listed below.

What we do not accept

  • Paper copies of journals or magazines
  • Incomplete multi-volume sets
  • Computer software and manuals
  • Audiobooks
  • LP records, cassette tapes, or VHS tapes
  • Encyclopedia sets
  • Outdated textbooks
