Internships

The student-teaching internship is 14 weeks, Monday through Friday in the last fall or spring semester of the program. Students are placed in a variety of school settings including public, private, Catholic, or independent schools in the greater Washington, DC, area. Students may request the school division in which he or she wants to student teach.

Out-of-area student teaching placements are available and may be arranged by the Office of Education Clinical Experiences. Students can also teach abroad. Placements are currently available in Rome, Italy and Auckland, New Zealand.

Careers

This program will prepare you to be a Virginia-licensed teacher in one of the following:

• Elementary Education, grades PK-6
• Secondary Education, grades 6-12 teaching Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, History and Social Science, Mathematics, or Physics
• Special Education: General Curriculum, grades K-12

For student not pursuing licensure and may be practicing teachers, education professionals who are not working in a classroom setting (such as an educational agency, museum, or government position) or students who intend to teach in international or private schools, the M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction offers four concentrations:

• Teaching & Learning
• Special Education
• ESL
• Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)
