Art on and off Campus

The Department of Fine Arts has new and improved studios and two art galleries on campus. Art students also benefit from Marymount’s close proximity to Washington, D.C., with numerous field trips to museums in the area and beyond, including regular study abroad opportunities.

The Department of Fine Arts has been actively expanding and improving our studio spaces on campus, with studios dedicated to design, drawing and painting, printmaking, and ceramics, as well as a dedicated space for seniors working on their thesis projects.

Marymount also has two separate art galleries, The Barry Gallery on Main Campus and The Cody Gallery at the Ballston Center. Each space hosts a series of shows each year, and the artists in those shows often visit our classrooms to engage with students. Two shows in the Barry Gallery each year are also dedicated to new student work, and more student work can be found in the Student Art Gallery, located on the lower level of Reisch Library, and at other locations around campus.

Art students also engage closely with works of art from local collections. With our close proximity to Washington, D.C., we regularly take students on field trips to local and regional museums. Works from local collections also form the backbone of many classes that meet on campus, particularly in art history. Fine Arts students also have opportunities to study works of art abroad, meeting with curators in museums and conservators in laboratories.

The Department of Fine Arts also plays host to visiting artists and scholars, who visit the classroom to share their expertise with students, and who present their work to the campus and the community.
