Program Requirements

The Global Scholars Program has four distinct components: coursework, language, research, and experiential or service-learning activities. Once they are admitted to the program, Global Scholars must also maintain a 3.0 GPA while completing the following four distinct globally-themed components.

Coursework (13 credits)

Answer

Global Scholars must complete the following course requirements:

Four 1-credit colloquium courses (4 credits)

  • GSP 201 The Intercultural Leader
  • GSP 202 From Local Activism to Global Impact
  • GSP 203 The Global City
  • GSP 204 Global Scholar Capstone Seminar

In addition to these colloquium courses, Global Scholars must complete three upper-level courses (9 credits) that meet the Global Education Office Global Perspective requirement or are otherwise approved by the Director of the Global Education Office.

Language Proficiency

Answer

Global Scholars must show a level of skill in a non-native modern language equivalent to successful completion of a second-semester, college-level language course. Students can meet this requirement in one of the following ways:

  • Complete six credits of college-level foreign language coursework at the elementary level, which may include courses combining language and culture
  • Complete three credits of college-level foreign language coursework at the intermediate level. AP, IB, and CLEP equivalencies are accepted
  • Complete one college introductory or intermediate-level language course while on a full semester or summer study abroad program, in a non-native English speaking country
  • Submit a research paper focused on the theme of lanugage and culture (from a non-native English speaking country). This paper may also satisfy the Inquiry-Guided Research requirement
  • Receive a waiver from the Director of the Global Education Office. Waivers will be granted when a student can demonstrate knowledge of a language equivalent to two semesters of college-level work, typically in a proctored exam.

Inquiry-Guided Research (3 Credits)

Answer

Global Scholars must complete a research project or paper from a list of potential inquiry areas in their field with a global focus. Research may be conducted independently within the student’s discipline, but it must be approved by the Director of the Global Education Office and supervised by a Marymount faculty supervisor.

Experiential & Service-Learning

Answer

Global Scholars are required to enhance coursework and inquiry through participation in any two of the following experiential and/ or service-learning opportunities:

  • an internship with a global focus, approved by the program director
  • study abroad coursework such as a semester or summer abroad or away
  • an independent study or project that uses second-language proficiency
  • a service-learning project with a global focus that can be done locally or internationally
