Join the Bilingual Telephone Screening Research Study and help us create a phone-based speech test to detect Dementia in English and Spanish!

The MCOA Team invites individuals from Virginia, DC, Maryland, and surrounding areas to participate in our exciting research project. The Bilingual Telephone Screening Research Study, which is approved by the IRB, aims to help expand scientific understanding and enhance early detection of cognitive impairment across diverse communities. We would love your participation to make a meaningful difference!


Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults aged 60 years and older.
  • Able to Speak both Spanish and English.
  • Have attended school for at least 5 years.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Adults under age 60 years
  • Adults with a history of neurological disease (Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy), substance abuse, psychiatric hospitalization, current cancer treatment, or stroke or heart attack within the previous 12 months, as determined by self-reported medical history.
  • Adults with a history of significant, untreated depression, as determined by self-report. (Participants being treated with stable doses of SSRIs will not be excluded)
  • Adults residing outside of the Washington, DC metropolitan area

What to Expect: 

  • An in-person visit to MU’s Ballston campus to complete questions about medical history, mood, cognition and level of bilingualism
  • Two telephone interviews (one in English and one in Spanish)
