How did Marymount help you prepare for your internship?

I leaned heavily on Marymount’s Center for Career Development to prepare for this internship. They curated my résumé, taught me specific interviewing methods and were with me every step of the way. My professors were also incredibly helpful. Being a student in a smaller school, I was able to seek individualized help from my professors to learn how to pass an Excel proficiency test. That was huge, giving me the skills I needed to stand out from the crowd.

What has it been like for you abroad?

I have loved being able to work and travel. I didn’t get the opportunity to study abroad while at Marymount, but this experience has given me that global perspective I sought. To be able to see so much of Europe and experience so many other cultures has been priceless. I think people don’t see international internships as a possibility, but they are out there and are worth looking into. When you seek international opportunities, it shows you are flexible and resourceful, eager to expand your horizons and be a team player.

What is the most important thing you have learned?

Always be open to learning. I came in thinking I was really great at Excel and data analysis because that’s what I had spent time studying, but when I got to Amazon I realized just how much I didn’t know. There is always someone who knows more than you. You are never the smartest person in the room, so don’t act like you are. Be willing and able to learn, take direction and be adaptable. The more willing you are to learn, the better connections you will make and the better asset you can be to your team.

What has been the highlight of your internship?

As an intern for Amazon Web Services, I’ve been able to play a role on the AWS team and have an impact on the company. I created an Excel spreadsheet system to track performance data for my team and they are planning on implementing it in other departments. It’s incredible to know that I created something that will continue to impact the company positively even after I am gone. Realizing how much impact my good work can have even after I leave is incredibly rewarding.

What is your advice to students looking for internships?

Use your resources well. We have such a tight-knit, well-connected network of alumni. Don’t be afraid to reach out and make a connection. More often than not, people want to help — but they can’t help you if they don’t know you exist. Take advantage of whatever resources are available to you where you are and you will be surprised by how far you can get.
