Purpose 

Marymount University (“University”) recognizes that there may be instances when checks are paid to representatives of an active employee, a former employee, or a deceased employee.

1.0  General Process

1.0.1  Checks will be released to a representative of an active employee only upon receipt of written instructions to do so. Such instructions must be signed by the employee. A manager shall verify the signature of the employee.

1.0.2  Checks will be released to a representative of a former employee only upon receipt of written instructions to do so. Such instructions must be signed by the former employee. A member of Human Resources shall verify the signature of the former employee. A former employee may request that their “final check(s)” be mailed “certified, return receipt requested,” and an appropriate notation shall be made in the former employee’s personnel folder.

1.0.3  Checks will be released to a representative of a totally incapacitated employee by a member of Human Resources upon receipt of the appropriate legal document such as a power of attorney. 

1.0.4  Checks will be released to a representative of a deceased employee by a member of Human Resources upon receipt of the appropriate legal documents such as a copy order appointing a personal representative, executor or administrator. Such check(s) will be made payable to “The Estate of .”
