Marymount University Goes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

Marymount University turned pink last week as the campus held its annual Pink Dinner and Pink Out MU Day, while the women’s volleyball team donned pink for a match as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, more than 260 students, faculty and staff members attended the Pink Dinner in the Lee Center, raising in excess of $1,500 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

“It was a great turnout from the campus community,” said Tina Hopp, assistant director of the Office of Campus & Residential Services.  “It was a fun, festive event.”

Under the theme “Strike Out Cancer,” members of the Saints baseball team served the dinner, which included food donated from a dozen community businesses. It was coordinated by Madelyn Kellen, Rebecca Bateman and Jennifer Carter, all senior resident assistants.

On Wednesday, Oct. 19, the entire MU community was encouraged to wear pink to show support for the fight against breast cancer. From noon to 1 p.m. in Gerard Dining Hall, the Student Health Center held its 5th annual “Pink Out MU Day.” Educational materials, free giveaways and instruction in identifying normal and abnormal tissue during a self-breast exam were available.

“The goal was to encourage students to become comfortable with a self-breast exam and to ‘know their normal,’ ” said Elaine McSorley-Gerard, family nurse practitioner at the Student Health Center.

She said the event promotes awareness of a disease that doesn’t discriminate among age, race or gender.

That night the women’s volleyball team added pink tops to their uniforms as they defeated Catholic University, 3-2.
