Marymount University is again offering exciting summer camp opportunities, including its popular D.C. Institute for high school students and a 3E (Explore, Enrich, Enjoy!) Summer camp for students ages 6 to 18.
The D.C. Institute, July 9-21, will provide high schoolers with three college credit hours upon successful completion of The Global Village, a Marymount course redesigned to be completed during a shortened summer experience. Students will live on campus in a residence hall.
The course will focus on globalization, the increased connectedness that has resulted in economic, political, and cultural exchanges that transcend national boundaries. The degree to which social life still takes place within national borders as well as what it means to be a member of the global community will be discussed and considered.
The material is relevant to every student, regardless of intended college major, because it will examine how this increasing global interdependence impacts our daily lives and could affect the future. It will include classes in the mornings, field trips in the afternoons, and evening activities. The course will be taught by Marymount professor Dr. Janine DeWitt, chair of MU’s Sociology Department, and Dr. Loes Damhof from Hanze University, Netherlands.
3E (Explore, Enrich, Enjoy) Summer Camp will be offered during two sessions, Monday through Friday, July 10-14 and July 17-21. It will include full- and half-day options for boys and girls ages 6-12, along with a “counselor-in-training” option for teens 13-18.
Social activities include games, sports and leadership skill development. Academic projects will allow students to explore science through nature and electronic gadgets, mathematics through making boats and geodesic domes, language arts through writing stories, and fine arts through creating dramas and cartoons.
The camp will be directed by Ana Lado, a Marymount professor of education, and Fatema Issa, a Marymount graduate student in education. Issa currently teaches fourth-to-eighth grade language arts at Nysmith School for the Gifted. Lado enjoys activities in which students make things they get excited about and is internationally known for teaching languages using children’s picture books.
