Hunger Banquet Raises Funds for St. Lucy Project

Some 80 members of the Marymount University community raised more than $1,100 and collected six large bags of food for the St. Lucy Project, which supplies pantries throughout the Diocese of Arlington, during an event last month. The Hunger Banquet, co-sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Center for Global Education, was held Feb. 5 at the Rose Benté Lee Center on the school’s main campus.

In order to raise awareness about national and world hunger, attendees were divided into three social classes and then received a dinner based on the social class they were assigned. Margie Ferris-Morris, board director and chairperson of World Hunger Education Service in Washington, D.C., spoke about the epidemic of hunger and solidarity with the poor.
“It was a fantastic event and great to see people coming together to learn what they can do about a problem that occurs right in our back yard,” said Ana-Sofia Alcaraz, the school’s coordinator for global engagement. “It was wonderful to have such a large, diverse and engaged group that wanted to get involved.”
She noted that participants included undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and family members. Each was given a list of volunteer opportunities throughout the region. They were also encouraged to help on campus with events such as the annual Halloween Fest, which works with children in need, and Food for Thought, a campus group that helps at a community garden and works with the St. Lucy Project.
