Meet GEO

Our Mission

The mission of the Global Education Office (GEO) is to serve Marymount University faculty and students by providing thoughtful leadership, administrative support, and academically-based international programming that fosters the development of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to be active, informed, and culturally sensitive citizens in the global community.

Our Primary Functions

  • To identify and develop quality and accessible international programs which promote global perspective, creativity, discovery and excellence in higher education.
  • To advance Marymount’s internationalization efforts through identifying international professional development opportunities for faculty, promoting opportunities for global programming collaboration between academic departments and non-academic offices, and by expanding global programs and partnerships.

With over 5 years of experience in the international fields of education and government, Aki is a firm believer that IE has the potential to change the world. After undergrad, she spent 2 years teaching English in rural Japan through the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program, and later, stayed to help with revitalization efforts through tourism. Upon returning to the States, she worked closely with people across DC, Maryland, and Virginia — creating and coordinating free cultural presentations on Japan, and advising students on study abroad and work opportunities there. She joined the Marymount’s Global Education Office in Fall 2023, as an advisor to continue her passion for promoting cross-cultural exchange and cultivating curiosity. As the Global Education Advisor, she is excited to get to know students to see how they can map out a study abroad plan that fits their needs as well as their academic and professional goals.
Aki holds a B.S. in Communications with a minor in Nonprofit Management from Appalachian State University, and is currently pursuing her M.A. in Intercultural & International Communications at American University’s School of International Service.
Aki’s Global Bucket List:
  • Go on a road trip around Iceland and see the northern lights
  • Hike the Inca Trail in Peru
  • Finish seeing all seven of the World Wonders
