Interdisciplinary Certificate in Palliative Care

This 12 credit (4 course) fully-online certificate will provide students with the knowledge and skills to provide quality care and education for patients and their caregivers for the purpose of supporting their journey through chronic disease and advanced illness.  This certificate will be the first of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The innovative, fully online format enables collaborative interdisciplinary learning with participants from around the country while allowing enhanced access to palliative care education.

The Palliative Care Certificate aligns with the missions of Marymount University and the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) to guide the intellectual, spiritual and ethical development of the whole person. The interdisciplinary nature of this certificate program aligns with the strategic plan and vision of the College of Health and Education to increase interprofessional and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.  Through this innovative approach to palliative care education, we aim to prepare high quality palliative care professionals of the future and to raise awareness regarding palliative care in the United States and globally.

Palliative Care Partnerships

This Palliative Care Certificate was conceptualized as the result of an academic partnership with OpusCare Florida who have provided excellence in palliative care since 1991 under the leadership of Dr. Ismael Roque-Velasco, President and CEO of  OpusCare.  OpusCare has locations in Miami, Florida, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Texas, and  McAllen, Texas as well as Conyers and Austell, Georgia.
