Initial Immigration Check-In

To report your SEVIS record change from Initial I-20 or Transfer-In Pending I-20 to Continuing I-20, ISSS first needs to verify your personal information, including U.S. address, receive an electronic copy of your valid passport identification/photo page, F-1 visa from within your passport, Most Recent I-94, and I-20 signed by you, and confirm that you are enrolled in a full-time course of study for the semester/term.

ISSS needs this information and these documents to report to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security / SEVIS that you are on campus. Failure to complete mandatory ISSS check-in on time may have an adverse immediate or future impact on your immigration status.

Steps to Complete Mandatory Immigration Check-In

Before attempting to complete mandatory ISSS check-in:

  • You must be physically present in the U.S.
  • Verify that your U.S. address is correct in Workday
  • You must be registered for a full-time course of study
  • It must not be more than 30 days prior to the program start date listed on your I-20 (exception may be possible for Transfer-In Pending I-20 students)
  • Gather required information and electronic copies of documents needed for check-in
  • It is preferred that you complete immigration check-in during F-1/J-1 international student orientation; however, earlier check-in may be possible in exceptional situations (contact isss@marymount.edu). You must submit your Immigration Check-In request via the ISSS portal no later than the Last Day to Add classes.
  • Once SEVIS registered, you will be notified that your updated I-20 with Continuing status is available in your ISSS portal for you to review and download for your records. Be sure to keep a copy of all  your I-20s issued, since you may need them in the future.

To submit your request for mandatory Check-In via the ISSS portal:

  1. It is preferred that you complete mandatory Check-In during F-1 new international student orientation. To begin, log in to the ISSS Portal.
    • Go to Tab 4: Initiate & Manage Requests.
    • Scroll down to find the request icons, then select Immigration Check In Request – Maintaining Status.
  2. Within the online request form, complete the Student Information (Questionnaire) then click Next.
  3. Carefully read the Maintaining Your F-1 Status Introduction (Learning Content), Government Regulations: Maintaining Your F-1 Status (Learning Content) and the Additional Important Marymount University Reminders (Learning Content) material. You will need to click Next after each Learning Content Section. You will take a quiz after completing this entire section.
  4. Take the International Student F-1 Regulations Pre-Arrival Quiz (Assessment). You have 3 attempts to receive a 14/14 before you can move forward with the ISSS Check-In process. Click Submit Assessment to receive your score. Once you have received 14/14, click Next. If you fail to receive 14/14 within 3 attempts, contact isss@marymount.edu for further instructions.
  5. Upload required documents:
    • Passport identification/photo page
    • F-1 visa stamp from within your passport (or USCIS notice of Change of Status approval, if change of status)
    • Most Recent I-94 Record (make sure to download your I-94 Record, not your travel history)
    • Current Form I-20, signed by you (or by your parent, if under 18 years old)
    • Click Next after uploading all of the above listed documents
    • You must: (1) electronically submit all of the required documents listed above, (2) add your U.S. address (must be within the DC metro area), and (3) be enrolled in a full-time course of study or have an approved Reduced Course Load approved in order for ISSS to be able to SEVIS register your record.
  6. Read F-1 Student Immigration Responsibilities Agreement (Signature Document) and check-mark to confirm.
  7. Click Submit

Allow up to 10 business days for ISSS to review and process your request. Please monitor your Marymount student email account for communication from our office. We will email you if we have questions or need more information before we can complete your request.

If you have questions or concerns, contact ISSS as soon as possible.
