New Student Orientation Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to Marymount University! The university provides orientation programs for new undergraduate first-year and transfer students, and parents and families. Each program is intentionally designed to achieve specific goals for the unique population. Below are some questions that are often asked about orientation:

  • DO ALL NEW STUDENTS HAVE TO COMPLETE ORIENTATION REQUIREMENTS?
    • Yes, the university has identified completion of New Student Orientation as an integral part of the student’s transition to Marymount University. To satisfy national, state, and local requirements, each student is required to complete the Canvas course and attend an orientation session. All first-year and transfer students are required to attend.
  • DOES COMPLETING THE DSP & CANVAS MODULES EARLIER AFFECT ACADEMIC ADVISING?
    • Upon completing the DSP and Canvas modules, student’s will be given an academic advisor. This will begin the advising process, you will meet with your advisor at your orientation session and leave with your fall schedule. Student register for classes at orientation.
  • WHEN AND HOW DO STUDENTS SIGN UP TO ATTEND AN OPTIONAL ORIENTATION SESSION?
    • Students who begin classes in the fall can register for orientation in May. You can do so by visiting our website or logging in to your Marymount Application.
  • WHAT DOES THE SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?
    • You will receive a detailed schedule a few days prior to arriving on campus. Freshmen sessions are 2 days programs which spans from 8:30am on the first day to around 1pm on the second day. For our Transfer session, the program will begin around 11am and wrap up around 5pm. All sessions are mandatory.
  • I AM HAVING TROUBLE LOGGING IN?
    • Make sure you are using the email address and password you used to create your Marymount Application, you DO NOT use your Marymount credentials. If you are still having issues, please reach out to us.
  • IS THERE A COST ASSOCIATED WITH ORIENTATION?
    • Each student is charged a new student fee, this includes the cost of orientation for you and two guests.
  • HOW DO I MODIFY OR CHANGE MY SESSION SELECTION AFTER I’VE ALREADY CONFIRMED ONE?
    • Students can log in at any time to change their session to another available date.
  • DO PARENTS OR FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE TO COME WITH ME TO ORIENTATION?
    • We provide an intentional program for families and guests during each orientation session and while they are not required to attend these sessions, we do encourage them to join us for the program. Throughout the orientation program, parents and families will have a separate schedule that runs concurrently with the student schedule in order to provide both audiences with adequate information tailored specifically to their needs.
      • Due to capacity limitations, we are only able to allow 2 guest per student this summer.
  • DO YOU PROVIDE HOUSING FOR PARENTS & GUESTS?
    • Yes! We have a block of hotels reserved at a discounted rate for our parents and guests. Please visit our website to find the correct link for the session in which your student is attending.
  • WHERE SHOULD I PARK DURING ORIENTATION?
    • Parking passes will be provided at check-in. Visit the guard house off N Glebe Rd and they will help direct you on where to park.
  • WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME FOR MY OVERNIGHT SESSION?
    • Remember only freshmen attend an overnight session. Since you are only here for one night, remember to pack light! We will provide linens, towels, & a pillow. We recommend bringing two changes of clothes, things that you will be comfortable sitting and walking around campus in. Remember we are located in Virginia and our summers get warm. Please bring any toiletries you need as well. As always, a phone charger and some form of photo identification
