{"id":5577,"date":"2020-11-30T19:53:22","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T19:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marymount.edu\/?p=5577"},"modified":"2022-02-21T12:11:18","modified_gmt":"2022-02-21T17:11:18","slug":"marymount-celebrates-international-education-week-with-a-focus-on-the-united-nations-sustainable-development-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/blog\/marymount-celebrates-international-education-week-with-a-focus-on-the-united-nations-sustainable-development-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"Marymount celebrates International Education Week with a focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iew.state.gov\/\">International Education Week (IEW)<\/a>, celebrated nationally from November 16-20, 2020, is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/\">U.S. Department of State<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/\">U.S. Department of Education<\/a> is part of an effort to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Marymount celebrated its own International Education Week a week early from November 9-13, with a weeklong series of events focused on the theme of \u201cCreating a Sustainable, Global Future.\u201d Each day was focused around one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including goals like reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities and global health and well-being. A full recap of the week\u2019s events, with video recordings, can be found on the CGE blog <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.marymount.edu\/global\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IEW 2020 Highlight Video\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9p08dChVV0g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Crystle, Assistant Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/Academics\/Services-Resources\/Center-for-Global-Education?lang=en-US\">Marymount\u2019s Center for Global Education (CGE)<\/a>, said that the CGE was looking to show the connection between international education and sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt its core, the goal of international education and exchange is to work to build a better, more prosperous and more sustainable world,\u201d she explained. \u201cAs an office, we wanted to showcase our commitment to incorporating sustainable practices and principles and examine our impact on our local and global communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The week kicked off with an event focused on reduced inequalities and expanding access to study abroad opportunities. Dr. Devin Walker, Director of Global Leadership and Social Impact at University of Texas at Austin, led the Marymount community in a discussion as part of the University\u2019s \u201cReal Talk, Real Change\u201d series. Dr. Walker called on international education professionals to design study abroad programs that better meet and center the needs of black and brown students.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the week, the CGE also hosted various talks and events with Marymount faculty focused on different SDGs. Dr. Elizabeth Langran and Professor Mary Gibson gave a presentation on Marymount\u2019s partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/aahuganda.org\/\">Arlington Academy of Hope<\/a>, which has helped expand educational access in Kampala, Uganda. Dr. Delario Lindsey of the Sociology department gave a talk on Medell\u00edn, Colombia, and discussed how other cities can take inspiration from its community-driven, inclusive growth.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday evening, the CGE hosted a special event with faculty, alumni and community partners for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=INRfuZFMqaY&amp;feature=emb_title\">\u201cMarymount in Nicaragua\u201d program<\/a>, a partnership in which Marymount DPT students travel to deliver physical therapy services to underserved communities. It was a moving discussion about the past, present and future of the partnership and the impact that it\u2019s had on both the community in Nicaragua and the faculty and staff themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The week\u2019s events closed with a focus on life on land and water, highlighted by two student clubs working to protect the earth\u2019s natural resources and advocate for a more sustainable future \u2014 the Belize Service Club and the Marymount Food for Thought club.
