{"id":2660,"date":"2020-10-15T19:42:42","date_gmt":"2020-10-15T19:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/developmenttwo.marymount.edu\/?p=2660"},"modified":"2020-10-15T19:42:42","modified_gmt":"2020-10-15T19:42:42","slug":"lambda-pi-eta-chapter-wins-rookie-chapter-of-the-year-rookie-advisor-of-the-year-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/blog\/lambda-pi-eta-chapter-wins-rookie-chapter-of-the-year-rookie-advisor-of-the-year-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Lambda Pi Eta chapter wins Rookie Chapter of the Year, Rookie Advisor of the Year awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Images in this story were taken before the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Marymount University chapter of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.natcom.org\/student-organizations\/lambda-pi-eta\">Lambda Pi Eta (LPH)<\/a>, the official honor society of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.natcom.org\/\">National Communication Association (NCA)<\/a>, is set to receive two awards in November \u2013 Rookie Chapter of the Year and Rookie Advisor of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Following a competitive selection that was resolved with a tiebreak, Marymount\u2019s Alpha Chi Omicron Chapter was named Rookie Chapter of the Year. This award is given to chapters that have been chartered in the last three years and \u201cstrive to reach the goals of Lambda Pi Eta\u201d and \u201cfind their place on campus and develop procedures and traditions that the chapter will adhere to in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Assistant Professor of Communication Dr. Megan McFarlane will receive the Rookie Advisor of the Year award, which recognizes an advisor who has served for three years or less and has \u201cdedicated his\/her time, energy and service to the student members of their LPH chapter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both awards will be presented during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.natcom.org\/nca-106th-annual-convention-communication-crossroads\">NCA\u2019s 106<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0annual convention, \u201cCommunication at the Crossroads,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0which will be held in a fully virtual manner due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLambda Pi Eta Honor Society offers fantastic leadership opportunities for students at local and national levels, and most of these activities provide unique professional development and networking opportunities that are completely student-led and student-inspired,\u201d explained Dr. McFarlane, one of five members of LPH\u2019s national Faculty Advisory Board. \u201cAs part of Marymount\u2019s Alpha Chi Omicron chapter, students have organized internship panels, offered professional headshots and participated in service opportunities. At the national level, members have attended the annual meeting at the National Communication Association convention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At last year\u2019s convention in Baltimore, a current Marymount senior and President of its LPH chapter \u2013 Brittany George \u2013 ran for and was elected to serve on the National Student Advisory Board for NCA. She is one of only three college students from across the country to hold this position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLambda Pi Eta has definitely challenged me to think outside the box and step out of my comfort zone,\u201d George said. \u201cBeing an elected member of the National Student Advisory Board has allowed me to network and connect with others across the United States. LPH has also given me the opportunity to learn more about myself in the Communication major.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2663\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2663 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/marymount.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Noelle Larino, Lauren Galdeano, Brittany George and Dr. Megan McFarlane at the 2019 NCA Convention in Baltimore.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic impacting all career fields and industries, including communications, former members of the Marymount LPH chapter credit their time in the organization for preparing them to navigate these uncertain times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the national meeting in Baltimore, I really came to understand how communication intersects with nearly every aspect of our lives \u2013 whether that be in the professional world, the political world or now most importantly, the health world,\u201d said Noelle Larino, now a Marymount graduate and former President of Marymount\u2019s LPH chapter. \u201cWhile attending the conference, we also got to meet important scholars in the communication world, which included the Foss sisters \u2013 Karen and Sonja. Whether it be planning for LPH events on campus or hosting activities for our chapter, putting different minds together and collaborating was the key to success.
