That exercise inspired her to help develop a tool that ensures privacy in public restrooms with hard-to-latch doors.<\/p>\n<p>Interior Design Adjunct Professor Susan Hergenrather watched a video of a young man with autism who said the phrase \u0093it\u0092s raining cats and dogs\u0094 makes him think cats and dogs are literally falling from the sky. That led to the creation of an app that helps autistic people interpret idioms.<\/p>\n<p>Both innovations won awards for the teams that created them at the United Cerebral Palsy 2014 Enabled by Design-a-thon held at Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and Google Washington, D.C. from Nov. 5-7. The event brought together designers, technologists, engineers, students, people with disabilities and service professionals to share ideas and create accessible products and technology to solve everyday problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u0093It was a lot of fun,\u0094 said Bendit, a senior interior design major from Lancaster, Pa. \u0093I\u0092m really happy that our team was able to create something so simple that could provide people with a sense of security in a public place. That was something we could all relate to.\u0094<\/p>\n<p>Participants also came from George Washington University and Mount Ida College in Boston. Teams were mixed from all schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u0093We had a great time,\u0094 said Moira Gannon Denson, an assistant professor of interior design who served as Marymount\u0092s facilitator at the event. \u0093Each team had someone with a disability. We all were guided in empathy exercises, and it was all about getting into and understanding the world of people with disabilities.\u0094<\/p>\n<p>Denson said United Cerebral Palsy waived participation fees for Marymount because of the volunteer work the school has done with the organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u0093It was such a cool experience to be able to brainstorm with other creative people, come up with ideas and get them to work,\u0094 Bendit said.<\/p>\n<p>Her team was able to output a handful or prototypes on a 3D printer to see which worked the best.<\/p>\n<p>Hergenrather\u0092s team was the overall winner and received Google Chrome laptops. Bendit\u0092s team was runner-up and earned memberships and workshops at Arlington\u0092s Tech Shop. MU student Jessica Denson\u0092s team came in third for designing a clip bracelet that provides stability on a low-dexterity hand. They won Google Chromecasts.<\/p>\n<p>Other Marymount participants in the two-day design workshop at Google Washington, D.C. included Associate Professor of Interior Design Robin Wagner and students Jessica Villeda, Chelsea Hendrix, Hieu Truong, Erika McGee and Heather Furman.
