Marymount University\u0092s biology department, in collaboration with the\u00a0Chemical Educational Foundation, is hosting a chemistry challenge for middle school students\u00a0from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28 in the Reinsch Library Auditorium.<\/p>\n
\u0093You Be the Chemist\u0094 is a question-and-answer competition for grades five through eight with\u00a0a format similar to the National Spelling Bee. It\u0092s designed to engage students in learning about\u00a0important chemistry concepts, discoveries and lab safety.<\/p>\n
\u0093It\u0092s a great way to get students excited about science,\u0094 said Dr. Deana Jaber<\/a>, an assistant\u00a0professor of chemistry at Marymount and the challenge\u0092s primary organizer.<\/p>\n Trophies will be awarded to the top four finishers, and each competitor will be given a gift\u00a0card, thanks to a donation from the Dominion Foundation, which makes the event possible. Dr.\u00a0Eric Bubar<\/a>, a Marymount assistant professor of physical sciences, will perform scientific\u00a0demonstrations between each round of the competition.<\/p>\n Ten different schools in Arlington and Fairfax counties will each send two students. The winner\u00a0will advance to a state competition in Suffolk on April 26.
