The Marymount University professor of education will discuss \u0093Primary English Education and Literacy Through Children\u0092s Literature.\u0094<\/p>\n<p>\u0093I absolutely love this topic,\u0094 said Lado, who has spoken at conferences in Korea and Japan in the past and travels to Pakistan twice a year. \u0093Pictures make language teaching easy. There are a dozen different types of picture books and I match them to a teaching strategy.\u0094<\/p>\n<p>She recommends picture books that are in print and sold on any bookstore or website.<\/p>\n<p>\u0093These are authentic pieces of literature used by English speakers,\u0094 she said. \u0093You have to have something that\u0092s at the students\u0092 English level, not their reading level.\u0094<\/p>\n<p>She added that it\u0092s also important to use a concrete topic, such as a book about animals, or a story with a sequence, or something with directions, like making a pizza.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Lado is the author of \u0093Teaching Beginner ELLs Using Picture Books: Tellability\u0094 (Corwin, 2012). Her teaching areas also include creativity and multicultural education. She has developed a computer assisted language learning program, \u0093e-English,\u0094 and materials for a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, \u0093Lado TEFL.\u0094<\/p>\n<p>After receiving her doctoral degree from Georgetown University, she worked on various federal grants in local bilingual schools and programs before joining Marymount in 1992.
