{"id":2119,"date":"2018-02-21T15:03:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T15:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/developmenttwo.marymount.edu\/blog\/marymount-university-alumna-named-to-scholarship-for-service-hall-of-fame\/"},"modified":"2018-02-21T15:03:00","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T15:03:00","slug":"marymount-university-alumna-named-to-scholarship-for-service-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/blog\/marymount-university-alumna-named-to-scholarship-for-service-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"Marymount University Alumna Named to Scholarship for Service Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Mischel Kwon, who earned both her bachelor\u0092s and master\u0092s degrees in computer science from Marymount University, has been named by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to the inaugural class of the Scholarship for Service Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to <a href=\"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/Academics\/School-of-Business-Administration\/Graduate-Programs\/Cybersecurity-M-s\">cybersecurity<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>\nKwon, who has held key posts in the Department of Justice and the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-Cert), is CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mkacyber.io\/\">MKACyber<\/a>, a rapidly expanding Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) and security consulting company with elite SOC expertise that she founded in 2010. She was one of only three inductees selected from nominations submitted by more than 60 universities.<\/div>\n<div>\n\u0093I\u0092m honored to be chosen,\u0094 she said. \u0093The CyberCorps: Scholarship for Program was important for my education, which prepared me as a cybersecurity expert at the top levels of both the public and private sectors.\u0094<\/div>\n<div>\nAfter earning her bachelor\u0092s degree in 2004, Kwon earned a master\u0092s degree from Marymount the following year while enrolled in a joint program with George Washington University (GWU). She received\u00a0a graduate certificate\u00a0in computer security &#038; information assurance\u00a0from GWU and was also an adjunct professor who ran its Cyber Defense Lab.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\nKwon said the NSF program is critically important. Established in 2000, more than 3,300 cybersecurity students have received scholarships and committed to work for federal, state, local or tribal government organizations through the program.<\/div>\n<div>\nThe Hall of Famer said scholarship opportunities were abundant at Marymount.<\/div>\n<div>\n\u0093Female professors and mentoring were accessible, and not just in the tech field, but females in hard sciences,\u0094 she added. \u0093Most of the department heads when I attended were female. That was a supportive environment.\u0094<\/div>\n<div>\nWhile at the U.S. Department of Justice, Kwon served as its chief IT security technologist and designed and deployed the first Justice Security Operations Center (JSOC) to monitor and defend the DOJ network against cyber threats.<\/div>\n<div>\nShe also served as director of the Department of Homeland Security\u0092s U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), spearheading the organization responsible for\u00a0analyzing and reducing cyber threats and vulnerabilities in federal networks.<\/div>\n<div>\nAfter leaving government service, Kwon served as vice president of public sector security for RSA Security before founding MKACyber, which helps enterprises make common sense decisions about cybersecurity based on strong business and technical acumen.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><strong>Photo captain<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Mischel Kwon<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mischel Kwon, who earned both her bachelor\u0092s and master\u0092s degrees in computer science from Marymount University, has been named by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to the inaugural class of the Scholarship for Service Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to cybersecurity.
