The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) has announced that Marymount University will host the 2024 USA Biolympiad (USABO) National Finals for the third consecutive year. The competition will be held on Marymount’s main campus from May 25 to June 8.

The competition features 20 high school students from across the country participating in 10 days of high-level biology instruction, including laboratory training and conceptual understanding, followed by two days of testing. Dr. Todd Rimkus, professor of biology at Marymount, emphasized the importance of the University becoming a hub of STEM education and innovation.

“Hosting these exceptional students for the third year in a row allows us to showcase Marymount’s remarkable scientific resources and educational environment,” Dr. Rimkus said. “Through our continued partnerships with esteemed organizations like the CEE and USA Biolympiad, we can illuminate the outstanding achievements and research within the University’s School of Science, Mathematics & Engineering.”

“These students are some of the highest achieving biology students in the USA,” said Joann DiGennaro, CEE president. “CEE’s USA Biolympiad program encourages excellence in biology education and challenges students and their teachers to reach the gold standard in science.”

Of the 20 finalists, four students will be selected to represent the U.S. at the 35th International Biology Olympiad, a worldwide competition involving student teams from over 80 countries. It will be held from July 7-14 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

“This is an incredible journey these students take, and it demonstrates the passion these students have for biological sciences,” said Kathy Frame, director of the USA Biolympiad. “For high school USABO finalists to experience this level of excellence is an exceptional opportunity.”
