{"id":17852,"date":"2023-10-17T10:04:02","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T14:04:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/?p=17852"},"modified":"2023-10-17T10:04:02","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T14:04:02","slug":"gazette-leader-marymount-starts-thinking-about-its-upcoming-75th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marymount.edu\/blog\/gazette-leader-marymount-starts-thinking-about-its-upcoming-75th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Gazette Leader: <em>Marymount starts thinking about its upcoming 75th anniversary<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Marymount University gears up to turn 75 years old . . .<\/p>\n<p>Wait, let\u2019s do that again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re about to become 75 years&nbsp;young,\u201d university president Irma Becerra said during a gathering of the Kiwanis Club of Arlington at the university\u2019s main Arlington campus on Oct. 11.<\/p>\n<p>The clock is running, but there\u2019s still some time for all the anniversary pieces to come together.<\/p>\n<p>Marymount was founded in 1950 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary order of Roman Catholic nuns. Beginning life as a two-year women\u2019s college, it has grown over the years to full-fledged university status, granting degrees up to and including the doctoral level.<\/p>\n<p>How far along is the planning for 75th-anniversary events? Things are moving in the right direction, one top university official said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s in process \u2013 stay tuned,\u201d said Dennis Slon, the university\u2019s vice president for advancement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still looking for volunteers\u201d to help work out plans, Becerra said.<\/p>\n<p>In a Q&amp;A session, the university president was asked how big Marymount might grow from its current 4,300 students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would love to get to the 8,000-to-10,000 range,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But there are both practical and philosophical limits to where enrollment will end up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t be tiny; we don\u2019t want to be large,\u201d said Becerra, who six years ago was recruited from a university in South Florida to succeed Matthew Shank as president.<\/p>\n<p>Current low teacher-student ratios can increase (to a degree) without losing what Becerra termed the university\u2019s \u201csecret sauce\u201d: personalized instruction that keeps those enrolled focused on the task at hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want students to get a four-year degree in four years \u2013 not four-and-a-half, not six, not seven,\u201d she said of the undergraduate experience.<\/p>\n<p>Earning a degree is an accomplishment every student entering an institution of higher education \u2013 and the institutions themselves \u2013 should strive for, Becerra said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing that I learned from my grandmother is, what no one can take away from you is your education,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Read the original story on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazetteleader.com\/arlington\/news\/marymount-starts-thinking-about-its-upcoming-75th-anniversary-7689184\">Gazette Leader&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; As Marymount University gears up to turn 75 years old . . .
